Question Sandown Open....

Not sure if this is the right area for it but here goes.

I drive past Sandown a fair bit these days and noticed the gates have been open everytime I drove past, even seen people in modded rides driving in there.

My question is, because someone told me...

You can roll up there any time, pay $60 and have a timed run down the quater mile.

Any truth to this?

Keep in mind the fella that told me this reckons he did in a 5.0L EF and ran mid 11's hehehe...

If you see his car you il know why I am laughing.

He's telling lies, it it were true the place would be packed, especially with Calder closed.

He also lies about his car, get him to come to Heathcote next weekend and show us.

next question beckons....

is there any place one can go, at anytime for a 1/4 mile run.

rather than a sanctioned type event?

to be honest i don't think his car would even make it to heathcote

Heathcote is the only quarter mile strip in Vic right now, Bairnsdale is 1/8 mile, i'm not sure what else is around.

for the record, Sandown does NOT have a quarter mile strip, nor a timing system.
So while your mate may have been able to pay and run his car around the track ( which i doubt) there would have been no way he did a 1/4 mile run let alone a timed quarter mile run there. The easternats drags are not timed.

Because Calder is no longer doing off street drag racing. Heathcote is now the number one ... and only place to drag your car the 1/4 mile in Vic. Sandown will never ever have them ...... ever.

The main gates are open most days as there are many driving schools that run there. you'll be able to drive in the entrance gate and the car parks but you won't get much further as there are security guards on the gates that give acces to the trackside areas. You wont get on the track at all.

Sandown was where I did the FPV drive day a few months back and there was also a few other Driving and riding schools there that day, Miurcotts, etc. John Bowe driving do many courses there too.

If you want to go do some laps of a track, NOT 1/4 mile, Calder is your best bet on one of the wednesday test and tune days.

Heathcote isnt in jeorpardy, because of whats happened at Calder but will do the opposite and give it a good shot in the arm. They are really putting an effort into making sure it will be a long term thing. No problems about the area being taken over for housing development, thats for sure!

Calder had some problems with some un sanctioned runs ..... being one of the reasons. I am sure there are some financial ones as well. Not so much on how well they were going but what it maybe worth as blocks of land. Its all a wait and see at the moment as they have spent a bit of money on the strip recently

A guy I work with reckons Calders closed because of Bob Janes divorce & he doesn't want the place to make any money until its sorted so he doesn't have to pay her some of the profit its making. Doesn't sound right to me because the land itself would be worth a fortune.

The land is full of Asbestos and old tyres, would cost a fortune to rehabilitate.

the thunderdome is made of the old tyres, i remeber passing there as a kid when they

were building it and all i saw were tyres upon tyres neatly stacked linke brickwalls to

form the embankments of the oval.

Apparently there is a 1/4 mile track (fully licenced) and a high speed loop soon to be built just out of lilydale. Opens late 2010.
