Default Focus Zetec - 215 tyres on 17" rims?

Does anybody know whether the rims on the Focus Zetec are 7" or 8" wide?

I had to get a puncture repaired on my almost new Focus (grrrrr!) the other day, which of course got me talking to they tyre guys about replacing my stock NCT5's with something a little more adhesive.

Now, I don't know a LOT about tyres/rims, but they tyre guy seemed to think that it shouldn't be a problem to stick some 215/45/R17 tyres to my rims, providing they were an 8" rim. Coudn't find the rim size anywhere in the users manual, and bythis time the tyre was already repaired and back on the rim so couldn't measure it.

Has anybody here done this before? I was not aware you could add wider tyres. The tyre guy reckoned it might even take 225's (!)

I have got 215/45/R17 on my Focus and they are a 17x7 rim! Also I could go to 225 if I wanted to.

I have 215/45/17s on my LS zetec rims.

No problem with the speedo being out or anything like that.

A problem is that you could go too wide which may encourage aquaplaning on such a wide tyre for such small weight, over the 215s

215's on a 7 inch rim won't be a problem, it's the recommended width for that tyre.

FYI Tyre measurements structure is:

Tyre width in mm, tyrewall in mm and inner diameter in inches.

mmmmmm not sure about that. I understood it was:

Tyre width in mm, sidewall as a percentage of tyre width, inner diameter in inches.

In other words, the side wall on a 215/45/17 tyre is 45% of 215.

Shoot me if I'm wrong
