Yea, its just an increase of sound.
The only Honda engine you'd feel a power surge in would be the K20 into a civic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYSZdn4ML5k |

I’ve driven an early CRX (version 2 hatchback SIr), Integra DC2R, Honda NSX 3.2 and ridden in S2000 and Integra DC5R (Aus spec) and DC5S on track days.
The earlier Vtec engines had a reputation of being pretty savage with their operation (all or nothing). I’ve driven one and while you could definitely tell that it was “on cam” it wasn’t too extreme. The DC2R has a kick around 5500rpm depending on a few parameters, it feels like mild (low blow) turbo boost when it switches to the high lift cam. The car really seems to wake up and will easily run in to it’s rev-limiter (8500ish revs). Economy also takes a dive (about 6 mpg) on track days when I’m revving the nuts of it. The latter K20 engines seem to have (and are engineered to have) less of a “jump” between cams. The NSX and S2K sound and feel pretty good when they are wound up. It doesn't feel like the tuned turbo cars that I have driven/ridden in where there is a ton of torque when boosting, just feels totally natural you keep the revs up to get the times. If you fiddle with the actuation, heads and cam profiles you can have quite a significant jump between the cams. A guy I know was building up an engine for his track car that was going to be barely tractable on the low cam and really be a weapon on the high lift cam.

Aw what a load of crap! I've driven all sorts of Vtec hondas, and while the performance is acceptable they are nothing special. No torque until you are spinning at a kazillion revs, and by then any falcon is long gone!
As they say, horsepower sells cars, torque wins races!
